Instituto Cervantes: Level 1

When I first enrolled to my Spanish Class my family and friends' reactions were, "Why", "Is that a work requirement", "Are you leaving for Spain soon" and "Are you living in Spain".  The answer is a BIG NO.  I've always wanted to learn another language.  When I was in school, my brother and I used to leaf through my mum's Japanese Phrasebook.  My mum used to work for Japanese Nationals and I think they might have given them the book.  In Uni, my friend Trisha and I wanted to enrol in Spanish but we didn't get around into doing it.  Back in the UK, my sister enrolled in a Spanish class but she quit after 2 levels.  Shame cause she only needed one then.  I don't know if she still understands Spanish.  I hope she does.

I find Spanish surprisingly easy.  Aside from words being similar to mine, my profesora Sandra was a very good teacher.  She draws, she is patient and she is a very fun teacher.  She is not intimidating at all.  Since finishing level 1 yesterday, I just wanna share my funny experiences at Instituto Cervantes.

We started with 14 students in the class.  I originally enrolled in the afternoon class and my class got cancelled so I asked to be transferred to the morning session.  I have 2 classmates who didn't show up on the first two sessions.  Riza showed up on day 3.  She is dating a Mexican Engineer.  She was supposed to have a Spanish Language background but when surprisingly, she doesn't know anything at all.  She got a text from her boyfriend during our break saying, "Mi Esposa, Mi Corazon" and she had zero understanding of the text.  Mind you, these are all understandable if you speak a fluent Filo.  On the 5th session, she was told that she can't continue with the class and repeat level 1 as she can't cope up with anything.  She didn't know what "Como te llamas?" is then.  I DIE!

The person who showed up on the 4th day was Geoffry.  I have never spoken with him directly but I was told that he used to go to Instituto but with his laziness, he got a failing grade due to absences.  Instituto Cervantes is very strict with absences which is good.  Reminds me of my Uni days at UST.

I would never forget Joselito.  He used to work in Carribean Countries and is currently working in Barcelona's Casino and he can't speak a proper Spanish sentence.  It is ridiculous right?  I didn't know how he survived.  I went to Spain too and I was able to understand people but if I actually live in a Spanish speaking country, I am pretty sure that I am gonna learn the language.  My uncle moved to Italy and after 3 months, he was able to communicate with people in Italian.  I just don't understand Joselito.  He is the most eager person to get the certificate but he wouldn't put work into it.  He would go to the class early but unprepared.  He would copy everythinggggg from us without asking how we were able to arrive with the answer.  I tell you, I never encountered difficulty until the 9th meeting as I didn't understand the instruction.  Joselito was almost dropped out of the class but he promised Sandra that he's gonna work harder.  He did show up early 'til the last day but when he still can't make sentences.

I made few friends in this course.  It is fun meeting like minded people.  I mean, you wouldn't go to a specialised class unless you are really interested right?  Right.

I am starting my level 2 class tomorrow.  Sandra informed us that she won't be teaching that class.  Gutted.  I hope a another filo teaches the class.  I am scared of Spanish profesor/a.

I hope I do well.  Buenas Swerte to me.

My Instituto Cervantes Library Card.  Expect Spanish DVD Marathon over the weekend.

Instituto Cervantes

I just enrolled to Instituto Cervantes' Intensive Spanish Beginner's Course.  I am soooo excited.  I always think that being fluent in both English and Tagalog is not enough.  I should strive on making myself better and better each year.  :)  With regards to my fashion dream, I am not sure which course to take - Advance Pattern Making or Sewing.  Hopefully I make the right decision.

I have 2 weeks worth of blogs to follow.  I am feeling lazy lately.

Day 8: Fashion Institute of the Philippines

The 8th day was the last and final day for my Intensive Pattern Making Course and I was terribly late.  It was embarassing!  What happened was, I left later than usual and I when I get to the MRT, the place was packed.  I was feeling ill that morning and don't have the energy to queue up so I decided to take the bus.  I forgot how the buses here stops everywhereeeee.  I was fidgeting throughout the whole trip.  When I was meters away from Shaw Blvd, I ran as fast as I could with cramps on my left leg.  Good timing muscles!  :P  I was 30 minutes late and everyone thought that I skipped class.  We did simple sleeves and collars on the last day.  I am still "bitin" from it to be honest.  Hopefully I can work my schedule out as I wanna learn Basic Spanish too.  Being fluent with 2 languages isn't enough.  I want more!!!

BTW, the picture above is my cousin, Botchok.  While I was on my lunch break, I randomly picked one of the magazines at FIP and found him on the style section.  So weird considering he's not into fashion.  The magazine is Garage Oct-Nov 2009 Issue.

Day 7: Fashion Institute of the Philippines

Nice, Clean Dart.  :P

I am so happy.  Just one more day 'til I finish my intensive Basic Pattern Making course.  I've been making lots of progress.  I am so proud of myself.  :)

I plan to take Basic Sewing after and if the Intensive Advance Pattern Making fits my schedule, I will take that too.   I asked Teacher Karla if Merchandising is fun but she told me that since I did Business in Uni, I shouldn't really take the course.  I love learning and I love everything that I am doing now.  I know dear boyfriend will agree that I am happier and I am less annoyed at night.  Good for the relationship eh?  LOL!

We did 5 different bodice today from the basic bodice.  I am slowly perfecting the bodice but I am still having a hard time memorising the steps.  It was only a day when the pattern was introduced to me but it felt like ages now.  So much progress since yesterday.

Day 6: Fashion Institute of the Philippines

OMG!  I didn't realise that making a bodice is gonna be difficult.  We have to make 7 computations and follow 20 steps just to make a simple one.  I messed mine up on first try cause I failed to measure on the right spot and changing one means changing everything.  Now, I have that as an assignment.  I left FIP early today.  I wasn't feeling very well.  I got the usual coughs and colds during rainy season.  Sucks cause dear boyfriend is gonna be here on Sunday and I don't want him that get my virus.  I gotta be healthy for next week's trip to Taiwan!  That reminds me, I gotta go to bed now and do my assignment early in the morning.

Let's chat tom Darlings.  :)

Day 5: Fashion Institute of the Philippines

I am happy that it is Saturday today.  That means, no waking up early and no MRT congestion.  Next week, dear boyfriend is gonna be here too.  Yay!

Our fifth day on Fashion Institute was hard.  The photo above was my pattern test and it took me 2.5 hours to execute the design on pattern!  I had pains in my legs and neck when I finished mine.  Next week, John Herrera is teaching us.  We are gonna do bodice, I heard.  3 more meetings and my basic pattern making course is done.  What shall I do next?  Advance Pattern or Sewing or maybe Spanish.  Hope everything fits my schedule.

Day 4: Fashion Institute of the Philippines

I hate serpentina skirts.  They gave me a hard time today!!!  I made lots of mistakes on the pattern.
Yeah, making skirts involves pie.  I like circle skirts, they're so easy to make.  I will make you soon as soon as I learn how to sew.  :)
This is what I have to endure everyday but I am okay with this cause I know that I am one step closer to my dream of working in fashion.  I am targetting high street then high end brand next.  I will just have to learn as much as I can for now.  Babe, this is how busy the MRT is everyday.  You have to queue up then queue up again just to get into the train.  People are horrible especially ladies.  They literally can hurt you.

Day 3: Fashion Institute of the Philippines

Sorry I wasn't able to blog last night darlings.  I was completely knackered!  It was a very busy day at Fashion Institute yesterday.  The school was completely packed with students.  My day didn't start right.  I failed to cut the allowance properly on my darts.  At lunch, I had to go buy myself boxboards.  Boxboards in Fashion Institute are like gems.  After lunch, we did wrap skirt, panel skirt, semi a-line, medium a-line and full a-line skirts.  It was fantastic but at 5:30PM, I gave up.  I got home at half past 7PM and was in bed at 8PM.  Woke up at 6AM this morning feeling tired still.  Worst, I have inexplainable pain in my right wrist!

Day 2: Fashion Institute of the Philippines

I am taking Intensive Pattern Making course.  Not to be recommended to anyone who isn't serious about Pattern Making or Interested in Fashion. This class takes so much of my energy.  Everyday, you have to take in lots.  If we were able to make a pattern draft for a basic skirt yesterday, we were taught pattern and sewing adjustments, kick pleats and waistbands today.  I have a complete pattern for a simple skirt now with adjustments.  Just like yesterday, I was able to finish first.  I am almost confident with my basic skirt pattern and I can now make a pattern by heart without looking.  We have to make 5 size 8 patterns at home and I only made 2 so far.  I am a bit OC with my work.  I want everything to be perfect.  After all, a good design starts with a good pattern.  I hope I survive my class tomorrow.  Our instructor told us that we are gonna do different skirt styles.  Wish me luck!

Day 1: Fashion Institute of the Philippines

I've always been fascinated with fashion and fabric construction.  I remember liking Carolina Herrera in elementary school and thinking that I could grow old looking as chic as her.  :-P  Today was my first day at Fashion Institute.  We were taught how to get proper measurements on people and we were able to make a basic skirt pattern which I ACED!  We were also given an assignment to measure 3 women and make another size 8 pattern and a personal skirt pattern which I made as soon as I got home.  I am very excited for tomorrow.  I had to turn down my final interview for Promod for this.  I know it's gonna be a good trade off.  :)

Hello Santa Claus: Pattern Making Book

I am taking matters in my own hands with regards to Pattern Making. I want to learn now! I am not happy with the Philippine High Street Market. I almost always find faults on clothes that they sell. They lack casual, printed or patterned clothes. Designer clothes are so expensive. Most people earn third world salary people! I must learn, I must learn, I must learn... Please Santa, send me pattern making books and portable sewing machine. :)

Mac Graphic Garden Palette

Before I left the UK, I purchase this MAC Graphic Garden Palette. Spend an hour youtube-ing how to blend the colours on but I can't find a link that actually helps. :( Guess I have to spend more time practising instead of watching youtube tutorials. HELP!

PROJECT AILEMA: Make Up

I stuggle in making myself fab on girly night outs. Aside from feeling the need to make my own clothes when I come back home and learning a new language, I wanna learn how to put make up on too. I think I know the basics, I can put foundation on with my hand(not with a brush), I can put on mascara, eyeliner, lipstick and a bit of blush. Eye make up is something I can't do. I found this website, fashion face very very helpful. I just need to invest on set of brushes and make up slowly. Right now, I only have sample lipgloss from Nars, Lancome and Dior and a Dior Kohl pencil. I borrow all my make up from my dear sister. She owns the most expensive make up from Dior, Chanel, Nars and Estee Lauder. Only the best for her. :)

Girls, will you buy over the counter make up or invest on expensive ones like my dear sister?

PROJECT AILEMA: Classes

PROJECT AILEMA

Goals:
  • Being a better version of myself
  • Reaching my full potential

Yeah, yeah, laugh all you want but I won't stop until I explored all my options and used up all my hidden skills. I am very much interested in the Spanish Language and Pattern Making so tonight I enquired at Instituto Cervantes, LaSalle College International and SOFA. Fingers crossed that we(Trisha et Moi) are not late for the enrolment. :)

I am taking Film Photography as a hobby and very much excited with the Diana Mini and its half frame feature. Hopefully they have it on stock so I can test it out in Paris. As for swimming, I think I am feeling confident with the water. Thanks Coach!

UPDATES:

I got emails from both SOFA and Instituto Cervantes. Spanish Classes starts on the 21st of November and unfortunately, pattern making and sewing will start on the 3rd of October. It is an 8 week session but if I enrol now, I will miss the 10th and 17th session. If I wanna do something, I wanna commit fully so I think I just have to let that one go for now. Hope they have more classes soon.

Doggie Paddle

I'm giving swimming another try. When Kent offered to teach me, I jumped in on the offer. I don't want my inability to interfere with my fun filled life. :P I want to be able to enjoy water sports. With 1 month remaining before my Thailand visit, I want to learn at least the basics of swimming. He is a very patient coach and pushy too like Luke. Love it! BTW, I can do a bit of doggie paddle for now. I can't control my breathing yet and I am insecure in deep water. I'm optimistic and I know that I will get better through time. I just need to practice and exercise so I have enough energy while swimming. Thanks for being patient coach! :)

Tennis Lessons

This year I wanted to learn something new so when my mum asked me if I wanted to sign up for tennis lessons, I said yes immediately. The idea was born after watching a Wimbledon match. I am not the sporty type but I am bored with my I am not the sporty type excuse. Yesterday I learn the different forehands, serving and hitting the ball basically. :-P No muscle aches today, thank God!

This post hits HOME - EDITED

I've been pondering about this for sometime now. I am simply attracted to people who I think I can fix. On my recent trip, I had the time to speak with my mum and I found out that I got the fixer genes. Here is a post from my daily bible:

I am a fixer. I am attracted to people that I think I can fix. About 2 weeks ago, I was out with my friend Amy eating at McDonald's when I wrote my relationship inventory. It started when I told her about my past boyfriends and she got confused to whom I was referring to. So I made a diagram on a tissue paper. *wink*

I told her that I once dated a guy whom I am not inlove with for 3 years cause he was a serious case. Aside from being suicidal, he was not doing well with his University. I confused caring for responsibility. I stuck with him for 3 years and wasted my own life while I try to help him progress with his Uni studies. In the end, he got his degree. I didn't get any thank you instead I got an in your face, I didn't do this with your help. He is right, he did it for himself. I broke up with him and didn't speak with him since. Well, he tried to get in touch but I stayed no contact.

I went with a guy for 7 months. Again, just like the guy above, he wasn't doing well in Uni. I felt the need to help him finish his degree. He did and he broke up with me. See the cycle/pattern? The more complicated the guy, the more I stuck with them. To be fair with this guy, he's a trophy boyfriend(yes, girls need a trophy too!) and he treats me so well. Never did I have to pay for any date. We were short for cash once and he was embarassed to borrow 20 pesos that's roughly 50p here in the UK. Met his parents and they loved me. That's not enough for me to stay with him.

I have fair share of guys who treated me well. One ex I am friends with. The relationship was short and sweet. We dated for a few months but we had good memories together. He is as gay as me at the time and he is funny and fun to be with too. Makes me laugh a lot. You are generous too aren't you? I know you are reading this. :-P The shorter the relationship, the more normal the guy is. I tend to shy away from boyfriend material.

On my last relationship, I just gave up trying towards the end. I figured, if I stop doing anything or If I stop fixing the problem then maybe my ex would figure something out and fix the problem but obviously he didn't. He, just like me, watched as the relationship crumbled.

That was me then, a fixer. I won't date a guy whom needs fixing again. I deserve someone who is whole. :)
